Gothic 1 Remake Torrez: Where to Find Him & The Price of Magic

Every wiki cuts the Gothic 1 Remake Torrez story into stubs — a location here, one quest there, a letter choice somewhere else. This is the whole path on one page: where the fire mage stands, how to finish his gateway quest, why he vanishes from the market the moment you do, what he teaches, and whether the letter goes to Torrez or Milten.

The 30-second find

Where is Torrez in Gothic 1 Remake?

By day, Torrez works the covered market in the south of the Old Camp, a step to the right of the firepit. Talk to him and ask to learn magic — that single line opens his gateway quest and the whole fire-mage path.

His gateway quest

The Price of Magic — your first spell from Torrez

Asking Torrez to teach you magic doesn't get you a spell for free. He sets a small price first: bring him the makings of a scroll, and he turns it into your first cast and teaches Rune Magic. Here is the whole shopping list.

  1. 1

    Parchment × 1

Buy from Graham, the camp's scribe

A single blank parchment is all the spell scroll needs — Graham keeps them in stock from the start of the game.

  2. 2

    Wolf's Claw × 2

Loot from wolves outside the camp — or buy from Mordrag

Wolves on the paths around the camp drop them; if you would rather not hunt, Mordrag's travelling stock can cover the pair.

  3. 3

    Bring them back to Torrez

Hand the parchment and both claws over at the market

Torrez turns them into your first spell scroll, then teaches Rune Magic and opens his inventory for trade.

Short on claws and would rather trade than hunt? The same travelling messenger you meet for Out of Sight carries them — our Mordrag guide covers his stock and the choice attached to him. One thing the claws are not: the New Camp’s bow merchant named Wolf— the names clash, but that trader neither sells nor drops them. Either way, two wolf’s claws and one parchment is the entire Gothic 1 Remake Torrez entry fee.

The vanishing act

Torrez disappeared from the market — is he gone?

This is the question that sends Gothic 1 Remake Torrez players to the forums: you finish his quest, walk back to the firepit, and he's not there. Nothing broke. He moved.

Completing the quest relocates Torrez from the open market into the inner castle — the gated heart of the Old Camp most players spend their first hours trying to enter. Look for him drifting around the church and temple area inside the walls, not back at his old market spot.

It catches people out because the market is where you met him and where his quest played out. But the Gothic 1 Remake Torrez move is by design, and it puts him among the camp’s other mages — closer to the Trial of Fire you take to formally join the Fire Mages.

Why he matters

What Torrez teaches — and the build he opens

Torrez is more than a quest stop. The Gothic 1 Remake Torrez role is the camp's on-ramp to spellcasting, and the services he sells decide how fast a caster gets off the ground.

Rune Magic
Unlocks the ability to cast from runes at all — the gate every spellcaster passes through
Best for: Any Gothic 1 Remake mage build, the moment you can afford the Mana
Scroll crafting
Lets you write one-shot spell scrolls from parchment, so spells aren't locked behind rune runs
Best for: Early casters short on Mana who still want a fireball in a pinch
Mana upgrades
Spends Learning Points to raise your Mana pool — the resource that caps how much you can cast
Best for: Committed mages funnelling Learning Points into casting over Strength
Mage merchant
Buys and sells scrolls, runes, spell books and potions once the quest is done
Best for: Restocking reagents without trekking to the New Camp's Water Mages

Rune Magic is the unlock that matters — without it, runes are dead weight. Once Torrez has taught it, the rest of a caster’s growth is a Learning Point question, and our mage build guide lays out how to split those points between Mana and survival in the fragile early game.

He is also a trainer in the wider sense the remake uses — see how he fits the full roster on our skills & trainers page. For the Old Camp, the Gothic 1 Remake Torrez route is simply the shortest line between a new prisoner and a working spell.

A decision later on

Give the letter to Torrez or Milten?

A Letter From the Fire Mages hands you a sealed letter and a choice of recipient. Both are fire mages; the payouts are not equal. Here is the full table — and why one wins for almost every build.

XP (sealed letter)Single source
Torrez200 XP
Milten400 XP — the highest payout on offer
XP (broken seal)Single source
Torrez100 XP
Milten300 XP — peeking still costs you 100
The item rewardSingle source
TorrezRing of Power (+5 Strength, −5 Dexterity), or an Elixir of Healing if the seal was broken
MiltenStill lets you pick a reward from Torrez: Essence Potion (+2 permanent Mana), a Fireball / Ball Lightning / Fire Lizard scroll, Ring of Dexterity (+5) or Ring of Power
The verdictSingle source
TorrezOnly worth it for a pure Strength build that wants the Ring of Power and nothing else
MiltenBest for almost everyone — more XP and you still choose Torrez's reward afterwards. Don't break the seal first

Then and now

The Gothic 1 Remake Torrez vs the 2001 original

Veterans will remember Torrez tucked away behind the castle gate. The remake brings him out into the open and gives him a quest — but his lore, and his ending, are intact.

Where you meet himSingle source
RemakeOut in the open market in the south of the Old Camp, among the traders
2001Tucked in the castle courtyard by the temple hall, behind the gate most players couldn't reach early

RemakeStill playable through the early chapters as your fire-mage contact
2001A Barrier-ritual mage under Corristo — cut down by Gomez's guards after the Old Mine collapses

The shift from a hidden castle mage to a market quest-giver is the remake making magic reachable early — you no longer need to bluff past Gomez’s gate to find your first teacher. The cost is the parchment-and-claws errand, a fair trade for a spell in your first chapter.

For the bigger picture of who lives in Gomez’s camp and how its factions slot together, our Old Camp guide maps the whole quarter Torrez calls home.

Quick answers

Gothic 1 Remake Torrez FAQ

Where is Torrez in Gothic 1 Remake?

The Gothic 1 Remake Torrez location is the covered market in the south of the Old Camp, just to the right of the firepit, during the day. Ask him to teach you magic to start his quest. Once it is done he moves out of the market into the inner castle and can usually be found around the church.

Why has Torrez disappeared from the market?

He hasn't bugged out — completing the quest moves Torrez from the Old Camp market to the inner castle, where he wanders near the church. This is the single most common Gothic 1 Remake Torrez confusion: players finish his quest, return to the firepit and find him gone. Head through the castle gate and look around the temple area instead.

How do you complete The Price of Magic with Torrez?

Bring Torrez one parchment, bought from Graham the scribe, and two Wolf's Claws looted from wolves outside the Old Camp or bought from Mordrag. Hand all three over and Torrez crafts your first spell scroll, teaches you Rune Magic and opens his shop. It is the earliest way into a Gothic 1 Remake mage build.

What does Torrez teach in Gothic 1 Remake?

Torrez teaches Rune Magic — the skill that lets you cast from runes at all — plus scroll crafting and Mana upgrades paid for with Learning Points. After the quest he also trades scrolls, runes, spell books and potions, making the Gothic 1 Remake Torrez shop the camp's one-stop fire-mage supplier.

Should you give the letter to Torrez or Milten?

In A Letter From the Fire Mages, give it to Milten for almost every build: a sealed letter pays 400 XP and you still get to choose a reward from Torrez afterwards. Handing it straight to Torrez pays only 200 XP plus the Ring of Power. Don't break the seal either way — peeking knocks 100 XP off the reward.

Is Torrez the same as in the original Gothic?

He is the same Fire Mage, but the remake moves him. In 2001 Torrez sat in the Old Camp castle courtyard and simply handed you a spell book on joining the Fire Mages; the Gothic 1 Remake Torrez stands in the open market and gates your first spell behind a fetch quest. His old-game fate — cut down by Gomez's guards after the Old Mine collapse — is unchanged lore.

Can you become a mage through Torrez?

Yes — Torrez is the camp's entry point for casters. Clear his quest to unlock Rune Magic, then keep spending Learning Points on Mana through him. He is the practical first step before the Fire Mages' formal Trial of Fire, and the cornerstone of any Old Camp Gothic 1 Remake mage build.

Can you buy spells and runes from Torrez?

Once the quest is done, the Gothic 1 Remake Torrez shop opens: he buys and sells scrolls, runes, spell books and potions, making him the camp's fire-mage supplier. Before the quest he only teaches and talks, so finish the parchment-and-claws errand first to unlock Torrez as a merchant.

Do you have to do The Price of Magic to learn magic from Torrez?

Yes — there is no way to skip it. Torrez gates your first spell behind the quest, so a parchment from Graham and two wolf's claws are the entry fee for Rune Magic. It is the cheapest path into a Gothic 1 Remake mage build, and the quest takes only minutes once you have the materials in hand.
