New Camp messenger at Gomez’s south gate
Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag: Kill Him, Escort Him, or Scare Him Off?
Thorus hands you Out of Sight, Mordrag waits at the south gate, and the wikis split the answer across four stub pages. This is the whole Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag decision in one place — what each of the three choices pays, what Mordrag’s ring is actually for, whether killing him locks you out of the Mercenaries, and the escort softlock that no walkthrough warns you about.
The 30-second decision
Should you kill Mordrag in Gothic 1 Remake? The three outcomes
Every Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag choice completes Out of Sight. They differ in XP, in loot and in how much fighting you sign up for — and for most characters, walking Mordrag west is simply the best trade.
Escort Mordrag west
The peaceful road- The payout
- 200 XP + Mordrag's Ring, and the walk marks the New Camp on your map
- The rule
- No fight — warn him, ask about his camp, follow
Every major walkthrough agrees this is the clean route: Mordrag leads you over the hills to the Mercenaries' gate, hands over his ring there, and Out of Sight still completes when you report back to Thorus.
Scare Mordrag off
The clean break- The payout
- 100 XP, no loot
- The rule
- Win a fist-and-blade brawl — at low health he runs
Tell Mordrag the camp is too small for the two of you and beat him down. He flees west to his own people, the south gate stands empty, and Thorus is satisfied — the cheapest outcome of the three.
Kill Mordrag
The hard way- The payout
- His gear, headlined by the Sting Mace — 25 damage, 22 Strength
- The rule
- The gate guards take his side — pull him into a 1v1 first
Attack Mordrag at the south gate and the guards join against you; lure him away before drawing steel. His body gives up the Sting Mace, a solid early one-hander if your Strength can carry it.
The setup
Where Mordrag stands — and who wants him gone
Out of Sight is the Old Camp's dirty laundry: a guard who wants a rival camp's messenger removed without his own name attached. Here is where the Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag quest starts — and where both men stand before you choose.
Mordrag works the outer ring by the south gate of Gomez’s camp — the full layout is in our Old Camp guide— talking the colony’s newest prisoners into trying the Mercenaries instead. Thorus, the castle-gate guard, gives you Out of Sight once you press him about working for Gomez. His travelling stock is handy for casters too — the Wolf’s Claws Torrez needs for The Price of Magic can be bought straight from him instead of hunted.
If Mordrag’s Sting Mace is what tempts you, weigh it against the Gothic 1 Remake weapons you can get free in chapter one first — 25 damage is a real early blade, but only once your Strength clears its 22-point gate. The same mace drops from Shrike in the New Camp, so you don’t have to deal with Mordrag to get one.
- Who he is
- The Mercenaries' messenger loitering inside Gomez's camp — and a travelling trader you can buy from before deciding anything
- Where to find him
- Near the Old Camp's south gate, on the outer ring — quest walkthroughs and the location pages all place him there
- Who sends you
- Thorus, the guard at the castle gate — exhaust his dialogue about working for Gomez and he hands you Out of Sight
- What you riskSingle source
- Less than it feels — player reports say no choice here locks a faction, and Lares keeps an admission route open that never needs Mordrag

The faction question
Can you kill Mordrag and still join the New Camp?
This is the fear behind every Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag search — and the one question the wikis leave hanging. The short answer reported by players: yes, the New Camp does not die with its messenger.
Mordrag’s escort is the comfortable way west — he knows the road and the walk drops you at the gate. But joining the New Camp runs through Lares and his odd jobs, not through Mordrag: players who killed Mordrag report walking into the Mercenaries’ camp and earning admission exactly as everyone else does.
What the choice does cost you is convenience — without the escort, nothing marks the Mercenaries’ camp on your map, and the hills west of the gate are scavenger country. The decision is about this chapter’s comfort, not your faction; the picks that genuinely lock doors are charted in our quest planner’s points of no return.

The keepsake
Mordrag's ring: keep it, give it to Lares, or sell it
Escort him west — or loot his body — and the Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag ring is yours. Three uses, three different runs, and only one of them can ever be undone.
- Wear it
- +5 Dexterity from a ring slot, hours before trainers could sell you that much
- Best for: Bow and dagger characters who want early Dexterity
- Give it to Lares
- Progress toward Admission to the New Camp — Mordrag's ring doubles as your introduction
- Best for: Anyone leaning toward the Mercenaries' camp
- Sell it to Fisk
- 65 ore nuggets at the Old Camp's fence
- Best for: Old Camp loyalists who just want the ore
The +5 Dexterity makes the wear-it option the quiet winner for archers, and the Lares hand-off effectively converts Mordrag’s ring into Mercenary goodwill. Selling is the only choice with a fixed price tag — 65 nuggets — and the only one that buys nothing you cannot earn elsewhere.

Troubleshooting
Mordrag escort softlock — when Out of Sight won't finish
The Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag softlock follows one script in the Steam reports: die on the road west, reload, and Mordrag only offers his shop — the escort gone from his dialogue. Three ways through it, in the order worth trying.
- 1
Save before he sets off
The reported softlock starts with dying on the road — scavengers, mostly — and reloading a mid-escort checkpoint. A manual save the moment you accept Mordrag's escort gives you a clean point to return to.
- 2
Already stuck? Beat him out of the camp
Players who lost the escort dialogue finished the quest the blunt way: draw a weapon on Mordrag, win the brawl, and he leaves the Old Camp on his own — Out of Sight then completes with Thorus as a scare-off.
- 3
Still locked? Walk west without him
The Mercenaries do not need Mordrag's escort — head out the south gate toward the valley lake on foot, and earn admission through Lares' odd jobs instead. Patch 1.000.004 fixed other save issues, but this bug has no confirmed fix yet.

Then and now
The Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag quest vs the 2001 original
Veterans remember this fork — it was the original Gothic's first real moral choice. The Gothic Remake Mordrag quest keeps the shape and changes the paperwork.
- The quest's name
- RemakeOut of Sight, handed out by Thorus at the castle gate
- 2001The same task was simply known as Thorus' Quest in 2001
- The escort reward
- Remake200 XP plus Mordrag's Ring at the New Camp gate
- 2001The same 200 XP and the same ring — unchanged in 25 years
- Report-back XPSingle source
- RemakeEarly remake guides do not agree on report totals, so this page publishes none
- 2001250 XP for reporting him gone, 300 XP for reporting him dead — plus 5 points toward Old Camp admission either way
- Naming ThorusSingle source
- RemakeNo equivalent failure state has been documented for the remake yet
- 2001Telling Mordrag who sent you failed the quest outright and cost 5 admission points
Quick answers
Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag FAQ
Should you kill Mordrag in Gothic 1 Remake?
Only if you want the Sting Mace — a 25-damage, 22-Strength one-hander — and you can pull him away from the south-gate guards who fight on his side. For most Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag runs the escort is the better deal: 200 XP, Mordrag's Ring and the New Camp marked on your map, with no blood spilled.
Can you kill Mordrag and still join the New Camp?
Player reports say yes — Mordrag is a convenience, not a gatekeeper. The admission route through Lares' odd jobs still opens if you walk west on your own, and an Old Mine ore order can introduce you to Lares without Mordrag's ring. The escort just makes the first trip safer and marks the camp on your map.
What does Mordrag drop in Gothic 1 Remake?
The confirmed Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag drop is the Sting Mace, a one-handed mace dealing 25 damage with a 22 Strength requirement — plus his ring if he has not already handed it over. Early guides disagree about a bow on his body, with weapon databases placing that drop on New Camp fighters instead, so this page does not list one.
What should you do with Mordrag's ring?
The Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag ring has three uses: wear it for +5 Dexterity, give it to Lares to push Admission to the New Camp forward, or sell it to Fisk for 65 ore nuggets. Bow characters get the most from wearing it; anyone set on the Mercenaries should hand it to Lares; committed Old Camp players can take the ore.
Where is Mordrag in Gothic 1 Remake?
The Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag location is the Old Camp's south gate, out on the outer ring of the camp. He is also a travelling trader, so you can browse his stock before deciding whether to escort, scare or fight him — and Thorus, who wants him gone, guards the castle gate in the camp's centre.
Mordrag only offers trade dialogue after the escort — is Out of Sight bugged?
That is the reported Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag softlock from the Steam forums: die mid-escort, reload, and Mordrag may only trade, with no way to resume the walk. It is reported, not yet confirmed fixed. The community workaround is to beat him up so he leaves on his own, completing Out of Sight as a scare-off.
Does the Out of Sight choice lock you out of any camp?
No lock has been reported for any Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag outcome — kill, escort or scare-off, every camp stays joinable afterwards. The one conversation that genuinely burns a faction comes later: claiming ties to the Swamp Camp's leader during Gomez's interview turns the Old Camp hostile.
Can you trade with Mordrag before deciding?
Yes — the Gothic Remake Mordrag shop is part of his messenger cover at the south gate, so browse his stock before you settle Out of Sight. Whichever ending you pick, the shop leaves with him: escorted, scared off or dead, Mordrag stops trading in the Old Camp, so buy what you want first.
What happens if you tell Mordrag that Thorus sent you?
In the 2001 original this was the hidden tripwire: name Thorus and the quest failed outright, costing 5 Old Camp admission points. Nobody has documented the same failure in the remake's version of Out of Sight yet — but Mordrag's dialogue still lets you be careless, so keep the guard's name out of it.

Settled Mordrag’s fate?
With the Gothic 1 Remake Mordrag decision made, the ring is your introduction — if the walk west sold you on the Mercenaries, take it to Lares and start earning the Bandit’s armour. If you stayed loyal to Gomez, report to Thorus and keep climbing.
