Gothic 1 Remake Cipher: the Swampweed Harvest buyer and where to find him

Most players reach the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher mid-quest, holding a load of swamp weed and weighing one question: sell it to him for a fast pile of ore, or carry it back to the Sect? This page answers that first — the Gothic Remake Cipher pays well, but selling to him slams the door on the Brotherhood for good — then covers where he stands, the full Swampweed Harvest chain, why he turns down Fisk’s fence offer, and what he drops.

The 30-second answer

The Gothic 1 Remake Cipher, in four facts

Who he is, where his bench sits, what he actually deals, and why the one choice he hands you is bigger than the ore it pays.

Who he isThe Gothic 1 Remake Cipher is a New Camp bandit — one of Lares' men, a level-8 rogue who doubles as the camp's main swamp-weed dealer and rides along on raids of Old Camp ore convoys.
Where he isBy day the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher sits in Silas' lakeside tavern in the New Camp, counting takings; by night he retires to a hut in the dwelling cave.
What he dealsSwamp weed, in bulk only — the Gothic Remake Cipher has no time for buyers after a stalk or two and waves them off to Baal Kagan or Baal Isidro. His stock is kept full by the novice Balor's runs from the swamp.
Why he mattersHe's the cash buyer in the Swampweed Harvest quest. Selling the harvest to the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher pays out fast, but it shuts the door on the Sect's Brotherhood for good.

Where he stands

Finding Cipher: Silas' lakeside tavern, then the dwelling cave

The Gothic 1 Remake Cipher keeps regular hours for a bandit — count on the tavern by day and the cave by night.

By day the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher sits inside Silas’ tavernout on the New Camp lake, counting the camp’s takings over a cup of rice schnapps. Come night he heads to a hut in the dwelling cave to sleep. He’s one of Lares’ men — a level-8 rogue who rides along on the raids against Old Camp ore convoys when the haul looks worth it.

If you’re still learning the New Camp’s cave layout, the New Camp guide lays out the lake, the tavern and the living quarters, and the interactive map lets you pin the tavern so the walk to the Gothic Remake Cipher reads at a glance.

The reason you came

The Swampweed Harvest: sell to Cipher, or stay with the Sect

Cipher is the cash buyer at the end of the Swampweed Harvest. Here's the full chain from Baal Orun to the sale — and the cost that comes with the ore.

Take Swampweed Harvest from Baal Orun

In the Swamp Camp, Baal Orun asks you to bring in a swamp-weed harvest (after Ghorim's Replacement). This is the thread that ends at the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher — or, if you stay loyal, back at the Sect.

Gather the harvest from the swamp farmers

Collect the cut swamp weed from the field hands — Balor and Viran among them — until you're holding the full load Baal Orun wants.

Pay Balor for the buyer's nameSingle source

Balor will tell you who pays best for fresh weed in the New Camp — the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher — but the tip costs around 50 ore nuggets first.

Decide: sell to Cipher, or carry it to the Sect

Hand the harvest to the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher in Silas' tavern for a fast pile of ore (commonly reported near 600 nuggets), or take it to the Swamp Camp instead. Selling to Cipher is the greedy route — it pays now but forfeits the Sect's favour.

Know what selling costs you

Once the weed goes to the Gothic Remake Cipher, Cor Kalom and the Gurus are done with you — that line into the Brotherhood closes. Only sell if you've already decided the New Camp, not the Sect, is your endgame.

The other reason people ask about him

Why Cipher won't be Fisk's new fence

If you arrived from A New Fence for Fisk, the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher is a dead end — but a useful one. He points you at the man who will say yes.

During Fisk’squest A New Fence for Fisk you go around the New Camp asking who’ll move stolen goods for the Old Camp’s trader. Put it to the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher and he turns it down flat — he has his own racket and no interest in fencing for Fisk.

He doesn’t leave you empty-handed, though: the Gothic Remake Cipher tells you Sharkymight take the work. Sharky is the one who actually becomes Fisk’s fence, so treat Cipher here as the signpost that sends you to the right NPC rather than the answer itself.

What's on him

What Cipher trades — and what he drops

As a trader the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher keeps a stocked supply of ore and goods to buy your surplus. If you ever cross him, his pockets are worth the loot below — single-source figures, so treated as such.

500 Ore NuggetsSingle source

The bulk of the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher's worth — bandit takings and weed money. Useful to know if you ever decide to put him down rather than trade.

Long Bow + 20 ArrowsSingle source

A solid ranged setup early on, ammunition included — worth more than it looks if you're leaning bow.

Bloodfly Stinger ClubSingle source

A blunt weapon carried by the Gothic Remake Cipher; respectable damage for the New Camp tier.

3 Essence of HealingSingle source

Top-grade healing potions — the single best reason his pockets are worth checking.

3 Lockpicks + Razor + TumblerSingle source

Rogue's odds and ends: picks for locked chests, plus the small valuables a bandit keeps on him.

8 Rice, 3 Rice Schnapps, 2 TorchesSingle source

Tavern sundries — rice and the New Camp's home-brewed schnapps, with a couple of torches for the cave.

Because the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher holds a deep purse of ore, he also works as a place to offload surplus gear — handy mid-run when your pack is full and the nearest big buyer matters. The 3 Essence of Healing on him are the standout pickup if you do decide to put him down.

His swamp-weed stock never runs dry because the novice Balor keeps running fresh cuttings up from the Swamp Camp. For the lockpicks he carries and where else early picks come from, see the lockpicking guide; for the rest of the New Camp’s faces, the NPCs guide ties them together.

Quick answers

Gothic 1 Remake Cipher FAQ

Who is Cipher in Gothic 1 Remake?

The Gothic 1 Remake Cipher is a New Camp bandit under Lares and the camp's principal swamp-weed dealer. He trades only in bulk, runs with the rogues who raid Old Camp ore convoys, and is best known as the buyer you can sell the Swampweed Harvest to. By day he's in Silas' lakeside tavern; by night he sleeps in a hut in the dwelling cave.

Where do you find Cipher in Gothic 1 Remake?

Look in the New Camp. During the day the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher sits inside Silas' tavern out on the lake, counting the camp's takings; at night he moves to his hut in the dwelling cave. If you only want a little swamp weed rather than to sell a whole harvest, he'll send you to Baal Kagan or Baal Isidro instead.

Should you sell the Swampweed Harvest to Cipher?

Only if you've given up on joining the Sect. Selling the harvest to the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher pays out fast — reports put it near 600 ore nuggets — but it permanently forfeits Cor Kalom and the Gurus' favour, which is the path into the Brotherhood. If the Brotherhood is your goal, carry the weed back to the Swamp Camp instead; if you're set on the New Camp or just want the ore, sell to Cipher.

Will Cipher become Fisk's fence?

No. When you ask the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher to act as Fisk's new fence during A New Fence for Fisk, he turns it down flat — but he points you at Sharky, who will take the job. So Cipher is a dead end for that quest except as the lead that sends you to Sharky.

What does Cipher sell and drop in Gothic 1 Remake?

As a trader the Gothic 1 Remake Cipher deals bulk swamp weed and keeps a stocked inventory of ore and goods. His drop list runs to roughly eleven items, including 500 ore nuggets, a Long Bow with 20 arrows, a Bloodfly Stinger Club, 3 Essence of Healing, 3 lockpicks, a razor, a tumbler, rice, rice schnapps and torches.
