Gothic 1 Remake armor comes from four routes — join a camp for its set, buy early pieces from a trader, grab the Digger’s Dress free, or find and steal the strongest sets (the Ancient Ore Armor waits in a chest in Gomez’s chambers). Mostly the armor you wear is a read-out of how far your faction story has gone. This Gothic 1 Remake armor guide lays out every set and its resistances, the best free early armor, how blacksmith upgrades work, and the camp-by-camp path from your first Digger’s Dress to the best end-game armor in the colony.
The 30-second verdict
Your best armor depends on where you are in the run and the build you are heading for. Here is the fast read before you spend ore or commit to a camp.
The basics
Each set tracks protection across several damage types. Reading those numbers is the whole game of choosing armor.
Gothic 1 Remake armor rates protection across six damage types — Edge, Blunt and Point for physical hits, plus Fire, Wind and Ice for elemental ones — and some pieces add an Energy bonus on top. A resistance value is flat damage blocked: 10 Edge soaks 10 points off every slashing hit.
Because the colony does not scale enemies down to you, that flat reduction is survival. Spending early ore on armor keeps you upright far longer than a slightly stronger blade — the same lesson the beginner tips guide drills, and a reason armor comes before weapons in your shopping order. The combat guide covers how blocking stacks on top of these resistances.

Before any faction set comes online, two Digger's pieces carry you — and one is the best free armor you can wear this early.

Resistances reduce incoming damage of that type. A “—” means the value isn’t confirmed yet — the game launched on 5 June 2026, so single-source numbers are flagged and unconfirmed ones left blank rather than guessed.
The progression
Armor upgrades in steps that follow your faction story, not loot drops. Each camp hands you a different set the moment you join.
After the early Digger’s pieces, your next jump is a faction set, and which one depends entirely on the camp you join. Side with the Old Campand you earn the well-rounded Shadow’s Dress at the start of Chapter 2. Join the New Campand Lares hands you the Bandit’s Dress instead.
The Swamp Camprewards Novice’s Armor — the natural fit if you lean toward magic. Because there is no respec, this is one decision: see the camps overview before you commit, since the set you wear and the build you play come from the same choice.

Make it stronger
Yes — and it's the most under-explained part of the system, so here is what's confirmed and what is still being mapped.
Shadow's Dress and the other camp armours can be upgraded for extra protection — the reason a faction set out-scales the early Digger's pieces over a run.
Upgrades are applied by a smith rather than found in the world. Which smith and the exact ore cost per tier are still being mapped by early guides, so we don't quote figures we can't stand behind.
Early ore is better spent topping up armour than chasing a slightly stronger blade — survivability keeps you upright longer than a few points of damage. See the beginner tips for the full spending order.

Best in slot
Two armor sets top most lists. Both are late pickups, and their exact numbers are still being confirmed this soon after launch.
Looted from a chest in Gomez's chamber in the Old Camp — you need his key, which players grab by downing Gomez and looting it (a save-scum/late-game move). One of the strongest sets in the game; exact numbers still settling.
In the Mountain Fortress: a chest in the lord's bedroom, opened with a key found at the top of the tower. A top-tier physical-defence set for the late game.

Quick answers
The Digger's Dress is the strongest armour you can get in the opening hours, with 10 Edge, 10 Blunt and 5 Fire protection. You can have it for free by joining the diggers in the Free Mine, which makes it the default early pick before any faction armour comes online.
Talk to Swiney in the Free Mine and choose "I want to become a digger." When he asks if you have ever worked a vein, answer "Yes" and he hands you the Digger's Dress immediately — no ore required. The paid alternative is buying Digger's Light Trousers from Fisk in the Old Camp for 313 ore.
There are four routes: most sets come from joining a camp (the Old, New or Swamp Camp grants Shadow's Dress, Bandit's Dress or Novice's Armor), traders like Fisk sell early pieces for ore, you get the Digger's Dress free from Swiney, and a few sets are found or stolen — the strongest armour, the Ancient Ore Armor, sits in a chest in Gomez's chambers in the Old Camp's inner fort, taken by lockpicking the door and chest or pickpocketing Gomez's key.
Yes — faction armour such as the Shadow's Dress can be upgraded by a blacksmith for higher protection, which is why a camp set out-scales the early Digger's pieces over a full run. Exact upgrade costs are still being documented this soon after release.
For the late game, Royal Guard Armor (reported at 48 Edge, 48 Blunt, 12 Point, 8 Fire, 5 Wind, 5 Ice) from the Mountain Fortress and Gomez's Armor from the Old Camp are among the strongest sets. Both are end-game pickups, and their exact figures are still settling so soon after launch.
