Who you're dealing with

Where to find Shrike in the New Camp

Before the fight there's a walk: the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike isn't out in the open, he's down in the New Camp's living cave, sitting in a hut that was never his to take.

The Gothic 1 Remake Shrike is one of Lares’ bandits — an abrasive level-6 outsider who moved into an empty mercenary hut in the living cave without bothering to ask anyone. That hut is exactly the one you want, which is why Gorn sends you down to evict him.

The reason you came

A Roof Over My Head, start to finish

Gorn's hut quest is short, but it has one trap built into it. Here's the full run on the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike — with the single-source steps flagged.

Ask Gorn for a hut, get pointed at Shrike

Tell Gorn you want a place to sleep in the New Camp and he starts A Roof Over My Head: an outsider, the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike, has grabbed a free mercenary hut in the living cave. Gorn's answer is blunt — go throw him out.

Find Shrike's hut in the living cave

Head down into the New Camp's living cave and find the hut the Gothic Remake Shrike has claimed. Walk in and confront him — he's not interested in leaving quietly, so the talk turns into a fight fast.

Beat him down (or talk him out)Single source

Fist or blade, knock the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike to the ground. There's also a quieter route some players hit: with enough standing you can talk Shrike into finding himself another hut instead of fighting — but the brawl is the usual path.

Loot him while he's down — do NOT finish him

Once the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike is knocked out he's lootable on the floor. Take the Sting Mace and Rider's Bow now, before he comes round. This is the moment the whole search hinges on: leave him alive.

Report back to Gorn for 200 XP

With the Gothic Remake Shrike beaten and spared, the hut is yours. Return to Gorn, tell him the job's done, and A Roof Over My Head closes for 200 experience. Kill Shrike on the ground instead and the quest auto-fails — no XP, no clean reward.

How the brawl goes

Beating Shrike down (or talking him out)

He's a level-6 bandit, not a boss. The fight against the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike is winnable early — and there may be a way to skip it entirely.

Gothic 1 Remake Shrike fight — a melee exchange in Gothic 1 Remake, the kind of one-on-one brawl that settles A Roof Over My Head against Shrike
A one-on-one melee exchange in the colony — the same close brawl you fight to put the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike on the ground.Official · Alkimia Interactive / THQ Nordic

Shrike fights with a mace and hits hard for an early enemy, so block and bait rather than trading blindly — the combat guide and parrypage cover the timing if melee still feels rough. You don’t have to kill him to win: knock the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike out and the fight ends with him collapsed and lootable on the floor.

There’s also a quieter route some players report — with enough standing you can talk the Gothic Remake Shrike into finding himself another hut, no fists thrown. It’s single-source and most guides cover the brawl, but if the dialogue option shows up, it’s the cleanest way through.

Kill or spare Shrike: both outcomes

Spare the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike (recommended)

Loot him on the ground, claim the hut, report to Gorn for 200 XP. A Roof Over My Head completes cleanly and you keep every item you pulled off him.

Execute Shrike while he's knocked out

The quest auto-fails the instant he dies on the floor. You forfeit the 200 XP Gorn would have paid — there's no upside to the kill, you've already looted him by then.

Loot him while he's down

Everything Shrike drops — grab it before he wakes

This is the half of the encounter that's pure upside. Search the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike the moment he's knocked out and you walk away with one of the best early weapons in the colony.

Sting MaceSingle source

The prize. A heavy one-handed mace that out-hits almost anything else this early — the same weapon the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike and Mordrag in the Old Camp both carry. (Some guides list it as a Spiked Mace.)

Rider's BowSingle source

A solid starter bow, also lootable off Lefty in the New Camp. Worth grabbing even on a melee run to sell or to soften enemies at range.

Arrows ×20Single source

Roughly twenty arrows to feed the Rider's Bow — free ammunition to start your archery off without buying any.

Ore nuggets ×15Single source

About fifteen nuggets — the New Camp's currency, and a real chunk of early money straight off the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike.

Healing & foodSingle source

Two Essence of Healing, three Rice Schnapps, rice, bread and fried meat — enough to keep you topped up through the next few fights in the camp.

SundriesSingle source

Two lockpicks, a razor, two torches and a tumbler round out the pile — minor, but all worth scooping while the Gothic Remake Shrike is out cold.

Gothic 1 Remake Shrike loot — the hero wielding the Sting Mace, the heavy one-handed mace you take off the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike
The Sting Mace in hand — the standout drop from the Gothic 1 Remake Shrike, and a brutal early one-handed weapon.Official · Alkimia Interactive / THQ Nordic

The Sting Mace is the reason to fight him at all: a heavy one-handed mace that out-damages nearly anything else you can hold this early, and the same weapon Mordrag carries over in the Old Camp. The full picture of where it sits against everything else is on the weapons guide. Take it, take the Rider’s Bow, sweep the rest — then leave him breathing.

Gothic 1 Remake Shrike FAQ

Should you kill Shrike in Gothic 1 Remake?

No — spare him.
