Why it matters
How your Gothic 1 Remake camp shapes the whole game
Choosing your Gothic 1 Remake camp is the biggest decision in the game. Your camp sets your class, the trainers you can reach, the armour you can wear and the high-tier magic you can learn. Because learning points are finite, you cannot dabble in every camp and still master one.
Your camp also changes how the world treats you. Guards, traders and questgivers react to your colours, and whole questlines open or close depending on the camp you wear. This is why each Gothic 1 Remake camp rewards a different kind of player.
Old Camp — Gomez & the Ore Barons
Trade ore to the outside world for comfort and power.
A fortified castle, guards in heavy armour, an entrenched hierarchy.
- Where it is
- The great fortified castle at the heart of the valley, ringed by the ore fields.
- How to join
- Reach Level 5 and build a reputation with the Shadows through the Casting Shadows tasks — buy back Whistler's sword, run errands and win an arena bout for Scatty. Diego then admits you with the Shadow armour and the rank of Shadow.
- Signature
- Heavy plate armour and one- or two-handed melee; the Old Camp is also the route to the Fire Mage path.
- Best for
- Players who want structure, melee fighters and a clear ladder to climb.

New Camp — The Water Mages & Mercenaries
Mine ore in secret to build a weapon that shatters the Barrier.
A hidden settlement of free miners, mercenaries and water magic.
- Where it is
- Hidden in the hills on the western shore of the valley lake, out the Old Camp's south gate.
- How to join
- Meet Mordrag through Thorus's Out of Sight task and let him escort you west. Run jobs for Lares — finish at least three and reach Level 5 — and he inducts you with the Bandit's armour.
- Signature
- Dexterity with bows and crossbows; the only route to the Water Mage path under Saturas.
- Best for
- Players drawn to freedom, ranged play and the road to magic.

Swamp Camp — The Brotherhood of the Sleeper
Worship the Sleeper and meditate toward release from the Colony.
A religious sect among the swampweed, robes and rituals.
- Where it is
- Deep in the swamp; Baal Parvez escorts you there from the Old Camp's southern exit.
- How to join
- Earn the approval of at least four Gurus (Baals) — harvest swampweed, run their errands and prove your faith — then reach Level 5 and speak to Cor Kalom to be taken in as a Novice.
- Signature
- The Templar — two-handed swords paired with crowd-control magic (Sleep, Charm, Fist of Wind); the most unique class in the game.
- Best for
- Players who want lore, faith and the mystic path.

Joining a Gothic 1 Remake camp is permanent
Once you join a Gothic 1 Remake camp, that is your faction for the whole run. There is no respec and no switching sides, so the camp you pick locks your class, your armour sets and the trainers you can reach. Treat your Gothic 1 Remake camp as a one-way door.
Your camp is also the gateway to your build. If you already know you want a fire mage, a master archer or the Swamp Camp’s Templar, let that goal pick your camp rather than the other way around. See the build overview for how stats and learning points shape each class, and the survival basics in the main Gothic 1 Remake Guide apply whichever camp you choose.
Quick answers
Gothic 1 Remake camp FAQ
Can you change camps in the Gothic 1 Remake?
No. Your camp choice in the Gothic 1 Remake is permanent — there is no respec and no second faction path. You can explore all three camps and finish early quests before you commit, but once you join, that is your faction for the run.
Which is the easiest camp to join in the Gothic 1 Remake?
The Old Camp. It has the cleanest admission route of the three Gothic 1 Remake camps — reach Level 5, complete the Casting Shadows tasks and Diego takes you in — which is why the Old Camp is the usual first-playthrough pick.
What is the best camp in the Gothic 1 Remake?
There is no single best Gothic 1 Remake camp. The Old Camp suits beginners and melee or fire builds, the New Camp rewards efficiency, archery and water magic, and the Swamp Camp is the only camp that unlocks the Templar. Pick the Gothic 1 Remake camp that matches the build you want.
Where is the New Camp in the Gothic 1 Remake?
The New Camp sits on the western shore of the valley lake. Head out the Old Camp's south gate toward the water, or let Mordrag escort you there after the Out of Sight task.
Can you visit all three camps before choosing one?
Yes. You can travel to the Old, New and Swamp Camps and complete early quests in each to farm XP and rewards before you lock in a faction in the Gothic 1 Remake.
What do you get for joining a camp?
Joining a Gothic 1 Remake camp grants a starting armour set and rank — Shadow, Bandit or Novice — and unlocks that camp's class, trainers and questline. It is the gateway to your build, so the Gothic 1 Remake camp you pick shapes the rest of the run.
